Rejuvenate Your Body’s Natural Detoxification System
You’ve probably heard the word “Detox” in many advertisements for health products that may have left you with more questions than answers. Such as what is a detox? Why would someone want a detox? In this month’s blog we are going to explore what exactly is a detox and a few natural ways to support your body’s ability to naturally detox.
Your body is sophisticated and already has a way of eliminating toxins utilizing the liver, kidney’s, digestive system, skin, and lungs. BUT…
Only when these organs are healthy can they effectively eliminate harmful toxins from the body. Let’s explore healthy ways to support these amazing organs.
What!? Did she just say have a drink?
Well, Yes. Reducing your alcohol and sugar consumption can help support your liver. Excessive amounts of alcohol and sugar can damage your liver function by causing fat build up, inflammation and scarring. Switching up your drinking habits to a non alcoholic low sugar drink can actually help support your body rather than tax it. One of my personal favorite mocktails is a Lime and Mint Mojito. Combine sparkling water, mint leaves and fresh lime juice to a glass with ice and enjoy!
Check out Youtube or Pinterest for many other great mocktail recipes and don’t forget to share them in the comments with us.
Getting 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night allows your brain to recharge itself and remove toxic waste. If you’re having trouble catching Zzzz’s try a calming exercise before bed such as journaling, reading or guided meditation. You may also find limiting screen time 1-2 hours before bed helpful.
Water, Water, Water!
Simply put, drink more water! Water transports your body’s waste in the form of urine, breath, and sweat. The suggested daily amount of water to consume is half a person’s body weight in ounces. This amount can be increased/decreased based on age, diet and exercise.
Antioxidants protect your cells against damage caused by free radicals. Research suggests that free radical damage plays a role in conditions such as dementia, heart disease, liver disease, asthma, and cancer. A great way to increase your antioxidants is by eating and drinking foods rich in antioxidants. An example of these are: berries, nuts, vegetables and green tea. We suggest taking a trip to our friends at Blue Yorkie Juicery in Algoma for help in this department.
This unique therapy combines the amazing benefits of aromatherapy and massage. The essential oils used during this treatment are high in sesquiterpenes which target the limbic region of the brain (imagine the body’s control center) When the essential oils are applied using specific massage techniques it can immediately begin to reduce inflammation, improve circulation, release toxins and restore balance.
We hope you found these ways to rejuvenate your body’s natural detoxification system enlightening and you can implement at least one or more of these ideas soon! Remember what you do today can improve all your tomorrows.
Wishing you health and happiness,
